October is breast cancer awareness month. We are very proud that we have been a part of getting ready for “the festivities” with a special project with our friends from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Last year, I re-connected with an old friend from high school whose wife worked for BCRF and realized that what they are doing is pretty spectacular. 91 cents of every dollar goes to research and every $50 we raise pays for an hour of research. And they’re the only A+ rated breast cancer organization, something that means something to me as we determine where to give our time and money.
We just recently launched their first digital lookbook and designed the 2016/2017 catalog for their Shop Pink program. Shop Pink features brands that are really doing something to support the cause, donating millions of dollars each year to fund research.
This year, one of my oldest friends in the world called me to tell me that she had been diagnosed. Luckily for me, we had just seen her and her family over the holidays but living so far away from her was really hard. I wanted to be doing more and felt like my calls and texts weren’t really enough. Her grace and honesty while facing her diagnosis were so inspiring to me and I am happy to report that she’s gotten to the better side of her illness.
As we get closer to October, I am struck by how far we have come and how far we still need to go. While I know that it appears that breast cancer is fully funded, please know that what we love most about BCRF, is their dedication to the end of all cancer and the work that they do has a halo effect on other illnesses every day.
While Tilden is a FOR profit and I’d be lying if I said I was ever really able to completely forget about that, it has been our honor and our privilege to work with an organization that is walking the walk every day. I ask you to support them too. Let’s be the end of breast cancer together.
